چکیده

We present an analysis of the X-ray light curves of the magnetic cataclysmic variable DP Leo using recently performed XMM−Newton EPIC and archival ROSAT PSPC observations. We determine the eclipse length at X-ray wavelengths to be 235 ± 5 s, slightly longer than at ultraviolet wavelengths, where it lasts 225 s. The implied inclination and mass ratio for an assumed 0.6 M ⊙ white dwarf are i = 79.7 • and Q = M wd /M 2 = 6.7. We determine a new linear X-ray eclipse and orbital ephemeris which connects the more than 120000 binary cycles covered since 1979. Over the last twenty years, the optical and X-ray bright phases display a continuous shift with respect to the eclipse center by ∼ 2.1 • yr −1. Over the last 8.5 years the shift of the X-ray bright phase is ∼ 2.5 • yr −1. We interpret this as evidence of an asynchronously rotating white dwarf although synchronization oscillations cannot be ruled out completely. If the observed phase shift continues, a fundamental rearrangement of the accretion geometry must occur on a timescale of some ten years. DP Leo is marginally detected at eclipse phase. The upper limit eclipse flux is consistent with an origin on the late-type secondary, L X ≃ 2.5 × 10 29 ergs s −1 (0.20 − 7.55 keV), at a distance of 400 pc. A&A manuscript no. Part 3 A Accretion Plasma diagnostics - Observations

Multiwavelength observations of polars are essential for developing the big picture of these systems, particularly to gain understanding of the relevant accretion-induced heating and cooling processes. Eclipsing polars are prime targets for such studies since different radiation processes can be disentangled by observations with high-time resolution. We present a preliminary combined analysis o...

Astronomy and Astrophysics the Xmm-newton Epic Background: Production of Background Maps and Event Files

XMM-Newton background maps for the 3 EPIC instruments in their different instru-ment/mode/filter combinations and in several energy bands have been constructed using a superposition of 72 pointed observations. Event datasets, with point sources excised, for the different instrument/mode/filter combinations have also been assembled, with longer exposure times than previously available files. The...

The X-ray Behavior of Two Cvs: Tt Ari and Dp Leo

We present ROSAT PSPC observations of the nova-like, or intermediate polar, TT Ari and the eclipsing polar DP Leo. Observations of TT Ari were performed as part of a simultaneous mul-tiwavelength campaign. The X-ray spectrum from the ROSAT PSPC (0.2-2 keV) was combined with Ginga observations (2-37 keV) to suggest the presence of at least three distinct emission components: an optically thin pl...

Astronomy and Astrophysics First Xmm-newton Observations of the Globular Cluster M22

We have examined preliminary data of the globular cluster, M22, from the EPIC MOS detectors on board XMM-Newton. We have detected 27 X-ray sources within the centre of the field of view, 24 of which are new detections. Three sources were found within the core of the cluster. From spectral analysis of the X-ray sources, it is possible that the object at the centre of the core is a quiescent X-ra...

XMM-Newton observations of the eclipsing polar V2301 Oph

We present XMM-Newton observations of the eclipsing polar V2301 Oph which cover nearly 2.5 binary orbital cycles and 2 eclipses. This polar is believed to have the lowest magnetic field strength (7 MG) of any known polar. We find evidence for structure in the X-ray eclipse profile which shows a ‘standstill’ feature lasting 26±4 sec. This allows us to place an upper limit on the mass of the whit...
